FORMER Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina has been re-elected as the new ANC regional Chairperson, beating his fierce rival, ANC’s former regional treasurer, Doctor Xhakaza at a hotly contested conference which saw delegates throwing chairs, bricks and at one stage punching each other.

According to preliminay results on Sunday night, Masina, who is running for a third term, has received 163 votes while Xhakaza got 151 votes.

19 votes from several branches were still quarantined due to disputes, according to the elections agents at the conference.

Those elected in the top five, along with Masina, include Thembinkosi Nciza as regional secretary. Other elected leaders include Jongizizwe Dlabathi, as deputy chairperson, deputy regional secretary Moipone Mhlongo, and regional treasurer Sello Skhokho

The Ekurhuleni regional conference was delayed at the weekend when some disgruntled members claimed they were being unfairly excluded from participating.

Private security guards had to be called in to calm the situation down.

Masina lost his position as Ekurhuleni mayor after the governing party lost its majority during the November 2021 local government elections.

The City of Ekurhuleni metro is currently run by a DA-led coalition government, after the DA’s Tania Campbell defeated Masina and secured her position as mayor of Ekurhuleni with the help of coalition parties including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA.
