RESIDENTS in Lepelle Nkumpi, Limpopo, have accuse the local municipality of neglecting sewage spills running into Zebediela hospital.
On Monday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo said it laid charges at the Environmental Management Inspectors (Green Scorpions) against Capricorn District and Lepelle Nkumpi local municipalities.
“These charges were laid due to the municipality’s violation of Section 107 of National Environmental Management Act and Section 24 of the Constitution for the neglected sewer system, which continues to pollute the environment around Lepelle Nkumpi local municipality,” DA councillor Johanna Mphogo said.
According to residents, the leaks, which are posing a danger to the health of residents and the environment, were reported to the municipality but nothing has been done.
Currently, there is a raw effluent spillage in ward 15 next to a business area in a popular spot where residents often gather for leisure and entertainment.
In another area in ward 4, a sewerage raw effluent runs along the road which passes in front of the Zebediela hospital. It flows into an open area in the Magatle village where it poses a health risk to residents and their livestock.
Residents urged the municipality to finally complete the Lebowakgomo sewerage plant project. Another raw effluent flows into an open space in the village of Makurung where livestock graze and drink from the stream.
