PHUTI MOSOMANE
THE Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, has announced the appointment of new members to the KwaZulu-Natal Ingonyama Trust Board.
The primary responsibility of the Board is to oversee the administration of over 2 million hectares of tribal land located across KwaZulu-Natal.
This land generates significant rental income for the kingdom.
The appointment of the Board aligns with the provisions outlined in the KwaZulu-Natal Ingonyama Trust Act, No 3KZ of 1994. Section 2A of the Act establishes the composition and function of the Board.
The Board consists of the Ingonyama or his nominee, who serves as the chairperson of the Board. Additionally, there are four members appointed by the Minister following consultations with the Ingonyama, the Premier, and the Chairperson of the House of Traditional Leadership in the province.
Furthermore, the Minister appoints four additional members, taking regional interests into account, in consultation with the Premier. The Premier, in turn, is required to consult with the Ingonyama and the chairperson of the House of Traditional Leadership in KwaZulu-Natal during this process.
Didiza said after completing all the consultations as required by the Act is pleased to announce the following persons who will start their 4 year term of office as members of the Board:
1. INkosi Thanduyise Mzimela (Chairperson), as nominated by Ingonyama
2. Adv. Linda Zama (Vice-Chairperson)
3. INkosi Mabudu Israel Tembe
4. Dr Thandi Dlamini
5. Ms Nomusa Zulu
6. Mr Dandy Matamela
7. INkosi Phallang Bokang Molefe
8. INkosi Sibonelo Mkhize
9. Ms Lisa Del Grande
The appointment of Mzimela has led to a bitter struggle between Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who is the traditional prime minister of the Zulu nation, and King Misuzulu over the appointment of Inkosi Thanduyise Mzimela as the new chairperson of the Ingonyama Trust Board.
Mzimela takes over from Jerome Ngwenya, who has been serving since the year 2000 appointed by the late King Goodwill Zwelithini.
It is understood that Buthelezi expressed concerns about how the transition from Judge Jerome Ngwenya to Inkosi Mzimela was handled. He wanted Judge Ngwenya to continue chairing the board.
