Councillors from the eThekwini municipality were on the ground in ward 103 this week to update residents on planned projects, including the delivery of houses and toilets.

Nine residents received the keys to their new houses from councillor Linda Mchunu in Bux Farm, Kwanyuswa and KwaMnamathi eMaqadini after their homes were destroyed in floods.

“These were not just ordinary houses, they were beacons of light and symbols of resilience and rebirth for families whose lives were tragically affected by the devastating floods,” Mchunu said.

“We know the pain and loss families have endured. These new homes will be a testament to their resilience and our commitment to rebuilding their lives.”

He told residents that the Embo Housing Project was progressing well, and 500 units were planned.

The councillor also briefed residents on a sanitation project in the ward.

Mchunu said the construction of 500 alternative toilets was underway, which aimed to address the lack of proper sanitation facilities in the area and enhance the quality of life of residents.

“These toilets will significantly improve hygiene and sanitation in the community, contributing to a healthier and more dignified living environment for everyone,” said  Mchunu.

The project, which cost R17 million, has created 110 jobs in the community.

Eleven local companies have been contracted for the construction.

It is expected to wrap up in the next few months.

“These projects highlight eThekwini municipality’s dedication to improving the lives of all residents, particularly those in rural areas,” said Mchunu.
