Emergency response teams have been dispatched to areas in the West Rand affected by a freak tornado.
Aid and alternative accommodation are also being provided to impacted community members following the devastating storm in Randfontein.
Strong winds and severe storm conditions struck parts of Randfontein and Westonaria in Gauteng on Wednesday afternoon, causing extensive damage to infrastructure.
Theo Nkoki, spokesperson for COGTA, sad on Thursday that the tornado has resulted in significant damage, affecting at least 1000 families, with reports of destroyed homes, and severely damaging Umphakathi shopping complex and churches in the area.
“Relief operations are currently underway, and the extent of the damage is being assessed. Community members will receive the necessary aid to rebuild their homes, and alternative safe accommodation will be arranged for those in need,” said Nkonki.
“The Gauteng government officials have on Wednesday, responded swiftly by visiting to determine the services required by the affected communities and to activate interventions needed.”
Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development and COGTA, Jacob Mamabolo, extended his heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery to the 24 residents of Toekomsrus and Mohlakeng injured in the tornado.
“The scenes of devastation and hardship witnessed in the aftermath of this tornado, is a stark reminder of the impact of a natural disaster such as these and the far-reaching consequences it has on our vulnerable communities,” said Mamabolo.
In response to the disaster, the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PPDMC) dispatched a team to support the district in mobilizing relief efforts and establishing a Joint Operational Centre.
