The Western Cape provincial government has handed over houses and title deeds to beneficiaries of the Metro Grounds Housing Development in George.

Western Cape Infrastructure Minister Tertuis Simmers highlighted the project’s significance on Wednesday, saying that The Metro Grounds project was unique.

“It is the very first project in South Africa where both housing units and title deeds are handed over to qualifying beneficiaries on the same day.”

The development aims to deliver 632 Breaking New Grounds (BNG) housing units, including BNG, First Home Finance, and Military Veteran Housing units.

The R191 million project is expected to be completed by August 2025, with 106 units already handed over to beneficiaries.

Initially planned to deliver 436 BNG units, the project was expanded due to increased housing demand in the area. An additional 196 units will be constructed under Phase 3, which began in September 2024.

Simmers expressed gratitude for the milestone in housing in the Western Cape, saying, “I am deeply thankful that we could hand over these 17 houses and title deeds to qualifying beneficiaries just weeks before Christmas.”

“My hope is that these new homeowners, along with the thousands of others we have served this year, find joy and comfort in their new homes with their families and loved ones this festive season.”

Premier Alan Winde, on the other hand, reiterated the importance of housing in uplifting communities, stating, “Restoring dignity to vulnerable and deserving residents often begins with a home. A roof over your head provides security, self-worth, and a sense of purpose—key to living a dignified life.”
