As the festive season approaches, a disturbing scam has surfaced in Tshwane, where municipal officials and contractors have allegedly been demanding “Christmas presents” in exchange for services rendered.
Kholofelo Morodi, MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, condemned the practice and said such actions are legally deemed as extortion that undermined the city’s values.
She said responsible officials would be held accountable for such actions.
“We will not tolerate this behavior from our officials,” Morodi declared, emphasizing that officials working during the festive season are providing essential services and should not expect gifts or favors from residents.
“Our residents will not be held ransom by corrupt officials. If this practice has been the norm, it must end immediately.”
Ironically, Region 4—recognized for its high compliance with municipal payments—has been identified as the area most affected by these unethical demands.
Morodi urged residents to report any such incidents, assuring them of the city’s commitment to addressing the issue.
“Ratepayers will always be treated with dignity and respect,” she said.
“I extend my sincerest apologies to those subjected to these unethical demands. Measures are being implemented to ensure this does not happen again.”
