Yusuf Bhamjee, former mayor of uMgungundlovu District Municipality and a stalwart of the African National congress (ANC), passed away on Friday at the age of 74.

An anti-apartheid activist and visionary leader, Bhamjee served as mayor from 2008 to 2016, and was instrumental in transforming uMgungundlovu District into a hub of economic and cultural progress.

He also represented the ANC in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and the National Assembly from 1994 to 2008.

The ANC hailed Bhamjee as a “champion of service delivery,” including his efforts to bridge the gap between governance and the people.

“He integrated ordinary citizens into service delivery programs and fostered a culture of peaceful coexistence, non-racialism, and political tolerance,” the party said.

Bhamjee’s tenure as mayor and his activism embodied his dedication to improving lives and fostering unity.

“He was always smiling, warm, and approachable, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and leadership,” said ANC Moses Mabhida region chairperson Mzi Thebolla.

Bhamjee is survived by his family, who endured the tragic loss of his wife, Sabera Bhamjee, in 2006.

He was laid to rest on Friday in Pietermaritzburg following Islamic rites.
