The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reported that over 7,000 individuals were arrested for various offences, including speeding, drunk driving, and attempted bribery, during the festive season.
Providing an update on Saturday, RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed that 7,448 arrests were made between 1 December 2024 and 1 January 2025.
Among these, 455 arrests for alleged drunk driving occurred in the Eastern Cape.
Zwane noted two incidents: the highest recorded breath alcohol level of 2.47mg per 1,000ml on the R61 in the Eastern Cape on 27 December and a motorist clocked at 209km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 in Limpopo on 17 December.
Additionally, over one million vehicles were inspected as part of the festive season enforcement plan.
“As of January 1, a total of 1,157,032 vehicles were stopped and checked by Road Traffic Authorities. Officers issued 408,783 written charges for various traffic violations, and 6,034 vehicles were discontinued,” Zwane said.
He urged motorists to stay vigilant and adhere to road safety rules as the holiday period concludes.
“The RTMC continues to caution motorists about driving in rainy conditions. Drivers should use headlights, reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid distractions such as cell phones,” Zwane advised.
