The City of Cape Town is mourning the tragic death of five-year-old Ameer Abrahams, who was fatally shot in an apparent gang-related shooting in Manenberg while walking to a local tuckshop with his father on Monday.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has since arrested three suspects.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis on Thursday expressed condolences to the Abrahams family.

“We feel the profound pain as parents ourselves and stand with the family in demanding justice for this innocent life lost under such horrific circumstances,” said Hill-Lewis.

Two women also sustained injuries during the shooting.

Hill-Lewis commended the SAPS for their swift action, which led to the arrest of three suspects linked to the shooting.

He reaffirmed the City’s commitment to supporting law enforcement in the fight for justice.

“The City stands ready to assist SAPS whenever requested in investigations into gang, gun, and drug-related crimes. Our investments in safety technologies—including gunshot detection systems in Manenberg, CCTV surveillance, Automatic Number Plate Recognition, and eye-in-the-sky aerial surveillance—are critical in this effort,” Hill-Lewis said.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said that the City would continue its collaboration with SAPS.

He noted that the City’s Safety and Security Investigation Unit had already shared information provided by Manenberg residents to aid ongoing investigations.

“The city stands ready to assist SAPS whenever requested for investigations into gang, gun, and drug crime through our investments in safety technologies, such as gunshot detection in the Manenberg area and others, CCTV, Automatic Number Plate Recognition, and eye-in-the-sky aerial surveillance,” Smith said.
