City of Johannesburg has suspended all Rea Vaya bus operations pending a plan to escort and protect drivers and buses after attacks on Monday night.
This decision follows tragic incidents where two bus drivers were shot and killed last night in separate incidents in Soweto.
Rea Vaya has urged passengers to seek alternative transport options during this period and assured them that regular updates will be provided.
In a statement, the bus company said: “We advise passengers to use alternative public transport. Regular updates on the situation will be given.”
Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the police are investigating these incidents as cases of murder.
In the first incident, a driver was fatally shot while stopped at a traffic light along Wildchestnut Street in Protea.
In the second incident on Tshithuthune Street, the driver was also shot and killed, resulting in a bus crash.
“The motive behind these shootings remains unknown, and police investigations are ongoing,” stated Nevhuhulwi.
