The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has announced the outbreak of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in the province, reporting a total of 168 cases to date.
The majority of these cases, 120 in total, have been identified in the eThekwini Municipality.
Following this, King Cetshwayo District has reported 25 cases, uGu District has recorded 20 cases, and uMkhanyakude District has confirmed three cases.
Health department spokesperson Ntokozo Maphisa urged the public to stay calm but also be mindful of good hygiene practices.
“We are concerned about these numbers, but in the same breath we would like to appeal for calm. It is important for people to understand HFMD, including what it is, how it can be prevented, its symptoms and how is transmitted,” said Maphisa.
The reported cases have been linked to primary schools and daycare centers.
Maphisa revealed that since the first six cases were reported between the sixth and 10th of this month, the department has visited affected schools.
“In all instances, the learners were found to be suffering from flu-like symptoms, as well as blisters, and swollen hands,” said Maphisa.
Maphisa said that children with symptoms of HFMD are to be kept at home until they feel better.
As the number of confirmed cases continues to rise, the Health Department is working closely with educators and healthcare providers to monitor the situation and provide support to affected families.
“We wish to appeal to the public for calm in this regard, and for those who can, to note the facts, and not spread fear,” Maphisa said.
