Eskom has announced that Stage 6 loadshedding was implemented at 1:30 am due to multiple unit trips at Camden Power Station.

The power utility said this measure will continue until further notice.

Eskom explained that this escalation from Stage 3, which began due to unit trips at Majuba Power Station and Medupi, resulted in a loss of 3,864 MW of generation capacity.

In addition, planned maintenance accounted for 7,506 MW.

Eskom deemed Stage 6 loadshedding necessary to replenish emergency reserves and prepare for the week ahead.

This development follows yesterday’s Stage 3 power cuts, prompted by similar unit trips at Majuba and Medupi power stations.

Eskom noted that the last time Stage 6 loadshedding was implemented was about a year ago, coinciding with 13 units going offline in February 2024, leading to delays in their restoration.

South Africans had enjoyed over ten months without power cuts until now.
