Eskom announced on Tuesday the successful restoration of Koeberg Unit 2, which returned to service on Sunday.

Currently operating at 646MW, it will incrementally increase output to its maximum capacity of 930MW.

The outage was caused by a steam leak in the reheat system, triggering Eskom’s rigorous nuclear safety procedures prioritizing standards.

Koeberg Nuclear Power Station maintains an exemplary safety record and adheres to global best practices and stringent regulatory requirements.

“Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom Group Executive Generation, emphasized Koeberg’s pivotal role in stabilizing South Africa’s electricity supply as a reliable provider of baseload power. It significantly enhances national energy security and supports Eskom’s transition to a cleaner energy portfolio,” the power utility said in a statement.

Eskom secured a license in July 2024 from the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) to extend Koeberg Unit 1’s operation until July 21, 2044.

This extension allows Unit 1 to contribute over 930MW of power for an additional two decades.

“With Unit 2 in a similar condition, Eskom has requested an extension for another 20 years pending NNR’s decision before its current license expires on November 9, 2025,” the power utility said.

The recent Long-Term Operation (LTO) program for Unit 2 included replacing three steam generators, extensive inspections, and refueling, ensuring continued safe and efficient performance aligned with Eskom’s strategy to secure Koeberg’s long-term viability.

Eskom highlighted that Unit 1 is undergoing planned maintenance, including refueling and mandatory testing, as part of its life extension program to ensure long-term reliability and safety.

Extending Koeberg’s operational lifespan is critical for enhancing South Africa’s energy security with reliable, clean, and cost-effective baseload power.

“The swift response to the Unit 2 outage underscores Eskom’s nuclear expertise and steadfast commitment to safety. Eskom maintains its dedication to upholding industry standards, ensuring the plant operates safely, efficiently, and reliably,” said Eskom.

“As South Africa advances towards a greener economy, Koeberg remains central to the country’s energy strategy. Eskom is committed to maximizing nuclear power’s potential to provide cleaner, more secure, and cost-effective energy for future generations.”
