The Government is currently in discussions with City of Johannesburg’s leadership regarding the proposed renaming of Sandton Drive.
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya made the announcement during a media briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Thursday.
He said renaming streets is a crucial aspect of the democratic society’s effort to address the injustices of colonialism and apartheid.
However, there are diplomatic considerations, particularly concerning the renaming of Sandton Drive, in relation to the United States.
He added that the National Government, through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, is engaging with the City of Joburg to manage these diplomatic sensitivities.
“The purpose of these discussions is to establish a process that allows the national executive to navigate diplomatic tensions with the US sensitively,” said Magwenya.
“This consultation process is essential, following prescribed procedures, ensuring transparency, and inviting public participation. It also emphasises intergovernmental cooperation. The Government’s mandate to rename streets in South Africa reflects the transition from the old dispensation to the new.”
Sandton Drive is currently home to the United States Consulate in South Africa.
The proposal to rename it after Leila Khaled has sparked controversy.
Khaled, a Palestinian militant and former member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), gained notoriety for her involvement in the TWA Flight 840 hijacking in 1969.
She was imprisoned but later released in a prisoner exchange.
