The investigation into the murder of Xolile Kalipa, a beloved Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor in Stellenbosch, remains ongoing, with the South African Police Service (SAPS) working to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
The 54-year-old councillor Kalipa was shot dead in Kayamandi on Sunday night.
According to police spokesperson Wesley Twigg, officers responded to a shooting complaint and found Kalipa with gunshot wounds to the chest. He was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.
“The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation. The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said Twigg.
The Stellenbosch Municipality has expressed sadness and shock at the loss of Kalipa, describing him as a “much-loved and deeply respected community leader”.
The mayor, Jeremy Fasser, said: “I am devastated by the loss of Councillor Kalipa. He was a dedicated public servant, a voice for the voiceless and a pillar of strength in his community.”
The municipality encouraged everyone to keep Kalipa’s family and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
The DA in the Western Cape has strongly condemned the brutal murder of Councillor Xolile Kalipa, calling on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to act swiftly in apprehending those responsible.
Describing Kalipa as a “gentle, true servant of the people,” the DA praised his tireless efforts to uplift the community he served.
DA representative Tertuis Simmers extended heartfelt condolences to Kalipa’s family, friends, colleagues, and the broader Kayamandi community.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Xolile’s family, friends, community and colleagues. The DA will monitor the matter closely and we hope the perpetrators will face the full might of the law,” said Simmers.
The incident has raised urgent safety concerns, with some councillors in the area expressing fear for their lives.
ANC PR councillor Monwabisi Rataza noted that Kalipa’s murder was the second politically affiliated person murdered in Kayamandi in less than a month, following the death of former ANC councillor Lindikhaya Maqeba in April.
“I am asking myself what are the issues around this that have resulted in murder. Kayamandi is a small area, there has been two deaths in less than a month,” said Rataza.
“We are fearing for our own lives. I am sure the police will work to apprehend the suspects in no time, to bring justice to Maqeba and Kalipa.”
