The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has called for City of Joburg Transport MMC Kenny Kunene’s immediate resignation.
The party raised concerns about criminality and underworld connections allegedly entrenched in the Patriotic Alliance (PA), especially after Kunene was reportedly present at the home of a murder suspect, Sandton businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe, during a police arrest.
Molefe, accused of orchestrating the hit of Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka, appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Tuesday alongside alleged hitmen Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana.
DA Johannesburg caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku stated: “Kunene’s role as MMC for Transport is absolutely untenable following his presence at the home of a murder suspect as police arrived to make an arrest. I call for Kunene’s immediate resignation, and if he does not resign, Mayor Dada Morero must terminate his position.”
Kayser-Echeozonjoku criticised Kunene’s alibi on ENCA, describing it as laughable and rejecting it outright as unreasonable for any South African.
“The Patriotic Alliance demonstrates daily that it does not prioritize South Africa’s best interests. It appears to be a selfish underworld organization associated with crime and corruption,” she added.
Kayser-Echeozonjoku emphasized that the people of Johannesburg deserve local government leadership free from connections to criminal activities.
“Kunene’s alleged underworld associations are not suitable for the Mayoral Committee in our city,” she stated.
She concluded, “Political trust comes from fulfilling promises and upholding the rule of law. The Patriotic Alliance fails to keep promises and uphold the rule of law.”
Referring to past incidents, she noted, “Historically, the DA has called for resignations in cases of criminal investigations, as with Gwamanda. Kunene must do the same. The office of the Executive Mayor must remain beyond reproach.”
Kunene has denied any association with murder accused Molefe, telling SABC News that he had accompanied a journalist to interview Molefe.
The incident occurred as police arrived, resulting in Molefe’s arrest.
Meanwhile, the court case against Molefe and co-accused was postponed to next week.
Sefoka and his bodyguards were killed in Woodmead in November 2022, leading to the recent arrests of four suspects in Gauteng.
Charges include murder and unlawful possession of firearms, with the next bail application scheduled for July 29.
