Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, met with community leaders in Midvaal on Thursday to hear grievances about the dire living conditions and ongoing challenges faced by residents.

Motara, joined by Midvaal Local Municipality executive mayor Peter Teixeira, reaffirmed government’s commitment to resolving the issues and assured residents of progress in the Sicelo Shiceka Phase 1 Development following concerns raised by the community.

Residents highlighted persistent problems, including water leaks, roof defects, and sewer blockages.

“We are determined to restore the dignity of the Sicelo Shiceka community by urgently addressing the issues identified. The Department will also review the alternative building technology used in the project to ensure its durability and long-term suitability,” Motara said.

She appealed for patience, asking residents to allow the Department adequate time to conduct a thorough investigation and develop sustainable, lasting solutions.

The Sicelo Shiceka Erf 78 project, which involves the maintenance of Alternative Building Technology (ABT) walk-up units for Phase 1, was prioritised following assessments by the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) and an independent engineer, both confirming structural soundness.

Phase 1 of the Sicelo Shiceka Development has already delivered 180 housing units. Phase 2 is set to deliver an additional 540 units upon completion.

The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements said it remains committed to providing quality, sustainable housing opportunities that restore dignity and improve the lives of residents across the province.

It added that the project will be integrated, safe, and inclusive, while also supporting socio-economic development.
