The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have “strongly condemned” Emfuleni Local Municipality, the Department of Human Settlements, and Set Square Developments for evicting residents of Ward 36 in Boiketlong who have lived there for almost 30 years.
“Vulnerable groups including children, youth, women, and people with special needs have been left displaced and traumatised, with no alternative accommodation provided, the EFF said in a statement.
The party said the evictions disrupted the lives of learners who were preparing for examinations, working people and local businesses.
“The EFF has consistently called for the expropriation of land without compensation for equitable redistribution. This revolutionary policy would have addressed the persistent land injustice that continues to plague our communities,” the party said.
The EFF has previously demanded the formalisation of all informal settlements in Emfuleni and other settlements across the province, and called for serviced stands to be made available to dwellers.
Referencing Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s State of the Province Address, the party said Lesufi was intent on criminalising the indigent and labelling displaced black communities as “illegal immigrants and criminals”.
“At the heart of this crisis lies the ANC-led government’s failure to allocate land and integrate the Boiketlong community into the Boiketlong Housing Mega Project.
The Emfuleni Local Municipality has also failed to provide proper alternative accommodation, despite the community’s presence on the land for nearly three decades.”
The Boiketlong Mega Project – which will provide an estimated 7000 mixed-use residential projects – is a partnership between the government and the private sector that is intended to expedite the eradication of shack settlements.
