Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has suspended the Head of the Department of Health and Wellness, Lesiba Malotana, with immediate effect following corruption and maladministration allegations uncovered by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).
The SIU’s investigation, which focused on irregularities within the Gauteng Department of Health and the Tembisa Hospital, previously led to the preservation of assets worth approximately R900 million that were unlawfully paid out by the hospital.
Speaking to Inside Metros, Gauteng Provincial Government spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said the administration is assessing the conduct of senior officials and decision-makers under ongoing SIU scrutiny.
“The suspension of the Head of Department follows a report submitted to the Premier by the SIU. The findings in this report have prompted a substantive forensic investigation,” said Mhlanga.
“The decision reflects a necessary administrative action based on documented evidence contained in the SIU report.”
The Democratic Alliance (DA), however, has called for Malotana’s dismissal rather than suspension, accusing Lesufi of protecting underperforming officials despite repeated scandals.
“The DA will continue to push for the firing of non-performing HODs like Malotana, who has presided over a department mired in scandal — including the assassination of whistleblower Babita Deokoran, the R26 million Tembisa Hospital fraud, the underspending of R725 million in the last financial year, and the return of R250 million meant for cancer treatment to National Treasury,” the party said.
Lesufi has appointed Darion Barclay, the current Head of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), as Acting HOD for Health and Wellness.
He said Barclay’s appointment aims to ensure stability and continuity in the department, emphasizing the need for “seamless service delivery.”
The Premier’s Office is expected to publish the signed performance agreements of all Members of the Executive Council (MECs) on Thursday.
In a statement, the Gauteng Provincial Government reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and law enforcement collaboration.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to root out maladministration and to uphold the highest standards of accountability and ethical leadership,” the statement read.
