The City of Tshwane and its surrounding areas experienced power outages on Wednesday ahead of the G20 Summit.

Although the cause of the outage remains unclear, the city acted swiftly to restore power.

“The City is aware of a power outage affecting the Pretoria central business district and surrounding areas. A team of technicians has been dispatched to investigate the cause of the outage with a view to restoring this essential service,” Tshwane authorities said in a statement.

“Customers will be kept abreast of developments. The city apologises for the inconvenience caused to the affected customers.”

Speculation of sabotage has emerged due to the timing of the outage, which affected areas including Sunnyside, Arcadia, Muckleneuk, Groenkloof, Pretoria Central, the Union Buildings, Berea, Nana Sita Street, Edmond Street, and Unisa.

The city has yet to provide comprehensive updates but assured residents via its X (formerly Twitter) account that “the team continues to determine other alternatives to restore this portion, while repairs are underway.”

Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya reassured residents that capable teams had been deployed to urgently address the power outage, appealing to the public for patience as officials work to resolve the issue.

“Our teams are checking on areas that remain off. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the power outage,” she said on X.
