The City of Durban is set to host the prestigious Jonsson Workwear Durban Open on the Sunshine Tour and HotelPlanner Tour from February 19 to 22 at the historic Durban Country Club.

The eThekwini Municipality said the R6-million tournament will bring together leading South African and international golfers, showcasing Durban’s rich golfing heritage and world-class facilities.

City Manager Musa Mbhele said hosting the event goes beyond sport.

“Durban is proud to host a premier golf tournament that brings together top local and international talent in a celebration of sport, community and economic growth,” Mbhele said.

“The tournament will also inspire young athletes, particularly from disadvantaged areas, through clinics, school outreach and mentorship programmes.”

The last major international golf tournament held at Durban Country Club was the 2025 Investec South African Open, where Dylan Naidoo made history as the first South African player of colour to win the national Open.

“Bringing the Jonsson Workwear Open back to Durban is incredibly meaningful for us,” said Nick Jonsson, CEO and chairman of Jonsson Workwear.

“This is where our business was built and where our headquarters are still located.”

Sunshine Tour commissioner Thomas Abt said the tournament plays a key role in player development.

“The Jonsson Workwear Durban Open is an extremely valuable part of the global pathway for our Sunshine Tour members. Through consistent exposure on the HotelPlanner Tour, we have seen several players progress to the DP World Tour,” Abt said.

The event forms part of the South African Swing, a series of four tournaments that open the new HotelPlanner Tour season.

According to the city, the tournament will be crucial in determining which South African professionals earn promotion to the DP World Tour.

“With international attention, elite competition and strong community upliftment initiatives, the Jonsson Workwear Durban Open promises to be another landmark moment for Durban and South African golf,” the municipality said.

HotelPlanner Tour director Jamie Hodges said Durban was an ideal venue.

“Starting our season in South Africa is always a highlight, and we are excited to visit Durban this year. Durban Country Club will provide an outstanding test for our players and the perfect setting to conclude our South African Swing,” he said.
