The eThekwini Municipality warned residents of widespread showers and severe thunderstorms earlier this week across KwaZulu-Natal, with the eThekwini region expected to be significantly affected.

It also urged residents to remain vigilant following a level 4 weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service for the rest of today.

“Heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail are anticipated from midday,” the municipality said.

“These conditions may result in flooding of roads, bridges, and low-lying areas; hazardous driving conditions; damage to infrastructure; and destruction of vulnerable structures, particularly mud-based homes.”

Residents in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, were further urged by eThekwini to take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

Additionally, motorists were advised to exercise caution, reduce speed, and maintain a safe following distance on wet, slippery roads.

“Where possible, residents are encouraged to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel,” the municipality said.

“The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert, ready to respond to any incidents.”

The municipality reiterated that the current weather alert remains subject to updates, and residents should monitor official municipal communication platforms for the latest information.

The municipality emphasised a warning to remind the public not to attempt to cross swollen rivers or streams, especially when water levels exceed ankle height.

It also advises contacting the City’s Disaster Management Centre for any emergencies.
