The eThekwini Municipality has called on local small, medium, and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs) and co-operatives to apply for the 2026 Lions’ Den Business Plan Competition.

The competition invites businesses with viable ideas to participate, with entrants standing to benefit from opportunities such as business development support, prizes, mentorship and networking.

The competition is open to entrepreneurs across three categories.

These are emerging businesses with annual turnover of less than R100 000, established businesses with annual turnover between R100 000 and R500 000, and the entrepreneurial excellence category for businesses with annual turnover exceeding R500 000.

“Applications are currently open and will close on 30 April 2026, with entry forms available online and at various municipal and enterprise support offices across the city,” the municipality said.

The competition has been used to support local entrepreneurs through prizes, exposure and business support.

Past winner Kwanele Mngoma, founder of KIK Refrigerator Rentals, walked away with a R40 000 cash prize, which he said helped expand his operations.

“The R40 000 cash prize allowed us to acquire 10 additional refrigerator units, significantly increasing our capacity,” said Mngoma.

“Before this, the main constraint was not demand but the availability of units. With the new refrigerators, we reached more customers, boosted revenue, and strengthened operations.”

“Over the years, the programme has supported entrepreneurs to grow, create jobs, and access networks,” said the City’s Economic Development and Planning Committee Chairperson, Councillor Thembo Ntuli.

“It remains a powerful platform for turning ideas into thriving businesses.”

“The exposure and networking with other entrepreneurs were invaluable, opening doors for learning and collaboration,” he said. “Preparing for the competition also sharpened my business skills through pitching sessions, masterclasses, and mentorship,” Mngoma said.
