On Tuesday, the City of Joburg took a significant step toward empowering residents of Ivory Park, Region A, with the handover of title deeds.

The event, held at the Lord Khanyile Community Hall, marked a major milestone in the city’s efforts to address the housing backlog and promote homeownership and was attended by MMC for Human Settlements Mlungisi Mabaso and Joburg mayor Dada Morero.

A total of 105 title deeds were handed over to beneficiaries.

“The City of Johannesburg has approved significant human settlements projects to tackle the housing backlog, including the 1996/1997 waiting list,” said Morero.

He stressed that the initiative aligns with the city’s broader strategy to reimagine Johannesburg through the perspectives of its residents.

“Our aim is to build a resilient, sustainable, and livable city,” added Mabaso.

Morero highlighted that after seven months in office, the Government of Local Unity (GLU) administration remains committed to setting strategic priorities that will drive development goals as outlined in the Growth and Development Strategy 2040 – Joburg Vision.

This initiative is also expected to reshape the city’s spatial patterns and address longstanding inequalities.

Morero also acknowledged residents’ frustration over delays in the Allandale Development project, reassuring them that progress is finally underway.

“I can confirm that work is in progress to repackage the development. This project cannot be delayed any longer—it must be completed within this term of office,” he affirmed.

Mabaso, on the other hand, added: “The City of Johannesburg is continuing the rollout of title deeds, seeing it not just as a paper transfer but as a restoration of dignity for those historically excluded from property ownership by apartheid legislation.”
