At least six people have died while tens of thousands of residents have been affected after two intense cold fronts battered the Western Cape from Sunday to Tuesday.

Provincial authorities confirmed the deaths on Tuesday as severe weather conditions continued battering the province.

Some of the fatalities were linked to people attempting to cross flooded rivers and waterways, while others were caused by falling trees during strong winds.

The storms damaged more than 10,700 structures in Cape Town, affecting more than 41,600 people across at least 26 informal settlements.

Some of the worst-hit areas include Khayelitsha, Philippi, Overcome Heights, Vygieskraal and Pelican Park.

In Wolseley, more than 60 residents had to be evacuated after rising floodwaters submerged homes and roads.

Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen has formally lifted Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) restrictions within the KwaZulu-Natal Disease Management Area (DMA), marking a significant turning point in South Africa’s battle against the highly contagious livestock disease.

Speaking during a media briefing in Cape Town on Tuesday, Steenhuisen said the move reflects improving conditions on the ground and growing confidence in containment measures.

He also revealed that 2.5 million doses of FMD vaccines have already been distributed nationwide.

“The vaccines were sourced from Argentine manufacturer Biogénesis Bagó to accelerate the rollout,” he said.

Steenhuisen also confirmed the official publication of the Routine Vaccination Scheme for Foot and Mouth Disease (RVS-FMD) in the Government Gazette on Monday, under Section 10 of the Animal Diseases Act, 1984 (Act No. 35 of 1984).

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has authorised formal court proceedings to evict three former uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Members of Parliament from state-owned residential properties in Cape Town.

The individuals have remained in the Parliamentary Village since their removal from Parliament in August 2024, defying notices to vacate issued by the State Attorney.

Following the expiration of a deadline last Friday, Macpherson stated that legal action, including a cost order, will be launched in the coming days to reclaim the properties.

“I’ve authorised formal eviction proceedings, including a cost order, against three former MK MPs who have been unlawfully occupying Parliamentary Village properties since being removed from Parliament in August 2024,” said Macpherson.  

“The department cannot become a party to a dispute between a political party and its members current or former.
