Thousands of football supporters lined the streets across Durban on Wednesday evening as eThekwini Municipality hosted a victory parade for Durban City Football Club after its historic Nedbank Cup triumph.

Supporters waved flags, sang club songs and donned team colours as they welcomed home the newly crowned champions, who proudly showcased the Nedbank Cup trophy from an open-top convoy. 

Durban City secured their place in South African football history on 2 May after defeating TS Galaxy 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, to lift their first-ever major trophy.  

“This victory is not only a proud moment for Durban City Football Club, but for the entire city,” said eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba. 

“The team has demonstrated determination, discipline, and excellence throughout the tournament, and we are proud to celebrate this historic achievement with our residents.”

Kaizer Chiefs Football Club has announced the launch of Kaizer Chiefs Ladies in Daveyton, formally establishing a women’s team that the club said will compete in the Gauteng Sasol League in 2026.

The newly established team will be based in Johannesburg and will play its home matches at the Kaizer Chiefs Village and Kwa Thema Stadium in Springs, according to the club.

Among the notable players are former Banyana Banyana midfielder Mamello Makhabane, as well as junior internationals Zanele Kunyamane and Katlego Mohale.

The squad is further strengthened by players with experience in the Hollywoodbets Super League, the club said.

Leading the team will be head coach Unathi Mabena, assisted by Justice Khunou, both bringing valuable expertise and a deep understanding of the local football landscape, according to the club.
