Staff Reporter

KwaZulu-Natal’s transport department said on Monday its Easter road safety campaign had helped reduce crashes and fatalities, after officers stopped 16,183 vehicles and charged 2,582 motorists between 2 and 4 April.

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said 337 motorists had been arrested for drunk driving, including 67 arrested in operations in Umhlanga and Durban North before the long weekend.

The department said the Easter enforcement figures also included 150 vehicles suspended from the road network, 188 impounded for lacking permits, 167 motorists found without licences, and 158 unlicensed vehicles.

Duma said two Ethiopian nationals and two Zimbabwean nationals were among those arrested for drunk driving.

He said foreign nationals detained in the operation were also found in possession of fraudulent documents, including a fake passport, a fake asylum seeker permit, and a fake learner’s licence.

The Easter campaign formed part of the province’s #NenzaniLaEzweni operation, launched ahead of the holiday with more than 3,483 law enforcement officers and 105 national traffic police officers deployed across KwaZulu-Natal.

The province had set itself a target of reducing road fatalities by 10% over the Easter and Passover period.

Duma said more than 4,500 motorists had been arrested for drunk driving between 15 August 2025 and 5 April, 2026.

He said the Road Traffic Inspectorate had recorded an 18% drop in festive-season road fatalities.

The department said it would hold an RTI #NenzaniLaEzweni awards ceremony in Durban on Tuesday to recognise teams involved in the operation’s four pillars of enforcement, evaluation, education and engineering.
