Staff Reporter

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has called on South Africans to take part in a winter solstice plunge on or near 21 June to raise funds for its rescue bases and water-safety education.

The NSRI said volunteers remained on duty throughout the year and were “ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice, even on the coldest day of the year”.

“As the winter solstice approaches on Sunday, 21st June, marking the longest night of the year, the NSRI encourages you to embrace the chill and celebrate the return of longer days with an invigorating plunge,” the organisation said.

The institute invited individuals, families, colleagues, and community groups to join hundreds of people across South Africa by plunging into the sea, a tidal pool, a swimming pool, local dam, or taking part in an ice bucket challenge.

“Not only is this a test of endurance and bravery, but it may also provide health benefits, such as boosting your immune system, improving circulation, and reducing stress!” the NSRI said.

The annual fundraiser sees teams of NSRI volunteers from rescue bases around the country taking part in cold-water plunges to raise money for their stations.

“This year, we challenge you to organise a winter solstice plunge on or near the 21st of June,” the organisation said. “Regardless of size, every contribution helps the NSRI continue teaching water safety and survival swimming, as well as conducting rescue operations and saving lives.”

Caption: An NSRI lifeguard braves the cold water in Elands Bay, Western Cape. (Photo: NSRI)

Participants are encouraged to choose a date, place and time for their plunge, create a fundraising campaign on GivenGain by searching for the NSRI “Winter Solstice swim 2026” page, select “Start Fundraising” and follow the steps.

The NSRI also urged participants to share the campaign with friends, family and colleagues and encourage them to take part or make a donation.

The organisation stressed that safety must remain the priority. It advised participants never to swim alone, not to swim in rough seas, always to have a flotation device with them, and to know who to call in an emergency.

For more information on organising a solstice plunge and the tax breaks available from donations, the NSRI said people could contact Renee at 021 434 4011 or renee@searescue.org.za.

The organisation also encouraged supporters to find their nearest rescue station through the NSRI Base Finder on its website and see how they can support local volunteers.
