eThekwini Municipality said on Friday that the temporary use of the old Durban Drive-In site — near Suncoast Casino and the famed Golden Mile — to process undocumented foreign nationals would not affect plans to develop the beachfront property.

“eThekwini Municipality wishes to reassure investor partners that the temporary use of the Drive-In Site as a staging and processing facility for undocumented foreign nationals will not compromise the site’s long-term development,” the municipality said in a statement.

The statement comes as various government departments are trying to process thousands of foreign nationals in Durban, many of them Malawians, who have been camping in the Sherwood area, about six kilometres from the city centre.

The Malawians were chased from informal settlements in and around the Durban area by anti-illegal immigrant “activists”, adding to the tension being experienced in the province and the country as a June 30 “deadline” nears,

Subscribe to read the full article.

The post eThekwini says second migrant processing hub will not derail beachfront investment appeared first on Inside Metros.

By Marcus Moloko

A large group of residents from communities across Benoni gathered at the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton under the banner “Mabahambe” (meaning “they must go”), in a march aimed at highlighting local concerns and demanding government intervention.

Organisers told reporters, “today we are gathered here in Sinaba Stadium, here in Daveyton. It’s regarding the same issue that we have, we want all undocumented immigrants to leave South Africa because we want to fix our country. We have a lot of problems. We have a lot of crimes that have been committed. When you try to find a person, you can’t find them because they are untraceable. They don’t have documents. They just come to the country illegally. We want them to go. We want them to go and fix their own countries as much as we also have our own problems that we want to fix here in

Subscribe to read the full article.

The post Residents stage Mabahambe march in Benoni appeared first on Inside Metros.

eThekwini Municipality, working with the South African Police Service, carried out Operation Buyisa in Wentworth and Merebank on Friday, targeting illegal activities, environmental violations and threats to public safety, the city said in a statement.

The municipality said the operation formed part of efforts to restore “law, order, and compliance” in the two south Durban areas and underscored the city’s commitment to law enforcement and community well-being.

During the operation, authorities found 18 undocumented foreign nationals working at a shoe factory in Wentworth, according to the statement.

A further seven people were taken into custody by the Department of Home Affairs for verification and further processing.

The factory owner was charged under Section 49, Subsection 3 of the Immigration Act, while the premises was closed, the municipality said.
