THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has reversed its decision to appoint corruption accused Zandile Gumede to the provincial legislature as MPL and has now asked her to step aside.

The party’s provincial executive committee met with Gumede on Friday, following a public outcry after the party decided to deploy Gumede to the legislature, despite facing fraud and corruption charges.

The ANC said this was in line with the ANC’s Nasrec resolution on dealing with members involved in corruption and malfeasance.

Part of that resolution says the ANC should publicly disassociate itself from anyone, whether business donor, supporter or member, accused of corruption or reported to be involved in corruption.

Provincial secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli said the decision was taken following the debate and outrage that was sparked by Gumede’s deployment to the legislature.

“During their period leading to their appearance before the integrity commission, such comrades are therefore not allowed to stand for or represent the African National Congress,” said Ntuli on Friday.
