The Johannesburg Tourism Company has launched its latest Tourism Ambassador Programme to enhance safety, improve navigation for visitors, and strengthen tourism awareness and information services in and around the City.
The programme, launched on Wednesday, deploys 227 energetic young ambassadors to key sites and attractions across the city.
This follows a rigorous process of screening, training, and upskilling. In mid-November, Joburg Tourism began deploying information ambassadors to various locations.
“This is a comprehensive, multi-layered initiative that we are confident will achieve its objectives,” said Thandubuhle Mgudlwa, CEO of Joburg Tourism.
Mgudlwa highlighted the success of past participants, noting that three ambassadors from last year’s intake have secured full-time jobs in the tourism sector.
“We’re proud to report that three participants from last year’s intake have secured full-time positions in the tourism sector,” he said.
To prepare the new recruits, the ambassadors underwent extensive training in partnership with the City’s Department of Public Safety.
The training included 10 modules covering first aid, basic fire prevention, service excellence, and tourism information dissemination.
Mgudlwa acknowledged the challenges faced in previous iterations of the programme but said improvements were made.
“Despite the challenges we faced in previous iterations of the programme, we have laid a solid foundation. By intensifying monitoring, recruiting qualified candidates, and refining logistical planning, we can build on these lessons to ensure even greater success in the current and future programmes,” Mgudlwa said.
