ActionSA in Merafong has sounded the alarm over the worsening state of the local municipality’s infrastructure, long plagued by sinkholes, water leaks, and neglect

Vusi Mcunana, ActionSA Merafong Regional Chairperson, criticised the local government for its consistent failure to address longstanding service delivery issues.

“While the sinkhole crisis has garnered rightful attention, the broader infrastructure collapse in Merafong has been grossly overlooked,” Mcunana said.

“Every major entry and exit route into the municipality is riddled with dangerous potholes, and internal roads across several wards have become nearly impassable.”

Mcunana highlighted the risks posed to both motorists and pedestrians, emphasizing the severe impact on local businesses already grappling with economic challenges.

“In Ward 12, a malfunctioning transformer has left residents in prolonged darkness, now extending into its second week,” he added.

“The municipality’s failure to communicate a clear restoration plan is deeply concerning.”

Residents have been informed to brace for an additional 11-day wait for power restoration, a delay Mcunana condemned as unacceptable, underscoring the municipality’s lack of urgency and coordination.

“Equally troubling is the ineffective ‘Operation Spush’ iService Delivery’ initiative, championed by the Mayor,” Mcunana continued.

“Despite its lofty promises, the campaign has failed to deliver sustainable results. Hastily repaired potholes are already resurfacing, exposing shoddy workmanship and inadequate planning. This outcome reflects poorly on the Mayor’s office.”

ActionSA is now demanding a comprehensive audit of all road maintenance projects under the initiative, including financial expenditures, contractor details, and an evaluation of work durability.

“We call for a transparent infrastructure maintenance plan addressing electricity, road repairs, and sinkhole risks, complete with clear timelines and measurable outcomes,” Mcunana said.

“There must be accountability from the Mayor’s office, ensuring consequences for substandard work and ongoing infrastructure failures.”

Mcunana added that the people of Merafong deserve more than broken promises and quick-fix PR exercises.

“They deserve reliable, quality infrastructure and a municipality that puts residents first,” he said.

“ActionSA will continue to amplify the voices of Merafong residents and hold this failing administration accountable every step of the way.”
