The City of Johannesburg on Monday warned property owners that it will continue cutting off water and electricity due to unpaid municipal accounts throughout the festive season, and has urged customers to settle their bills before going on holiday.

The city’s group finance department said many residents neglect their municipal accounts in December, risking disconnection while they are away.

“During the festive season, especially in December, we see many customers leaving the City for extended holidays. Over the years, we have observed that a large number forget to settle their municipal accounts before travelling,” said Kgamanyane Maphologela, Director: Communications and Stakeholder Engagement, Group Finance.

The municipality said it has intensified so-called Level 3 disconnections, which target habitual defaulters.

Under Level 3, officials may physically remove electricity cables, conductors and water or electricity meters. Customers must then reapply for services through normal processes and pay the associated costs before reconnection.

“We understand that many families feel the pinch during this time of the year, but we urge customers to honour their municipal obligations. Our credit control procedures remain active throughout the festive season. We would hate to see anyone without access to water or power simply because of missed payments,” said Maphologela.

The city said it encouraged households and businesses in financial difficulty to apply for assistance under its Debt Relief Programme Phase 4, launched on 1 November, which is aimed at helping customers settle arrears.

Residents can pay accounts via EasyPay outlets at major retailers, debit orders, bank deposits, ATMs, internet and cellphone banking, the SA Post Office, the e-Joburg portal or any city customer service centre.

“Paying your account on time ensures peace of mind and an uninterrupted festive
season. Customers with queries can contact Joburg Connect at 0860 562 874 or
visit any Customer Service Centre,” said Maphologela.
