KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and Premier Thami Ntuli joined forces with Durban Metro Police this week to connect with holidaymakers along the Durban beachfront as part of the nationwide #SaferFestiveSeason campaign.
The initiative, which brings together law enforcement agencies, government officials, and community members, is aimed at strengthening police-community relations during the busy holiday period.
Mkhwanazi emphasized that public safety is a shared responsibility.
Premier Ntuli praised the police for their proactive approach to crime prevention, saying their visible presence has already yielded positive results.
“We thank them for the wonderful work that they are doing. Even the rescue teams are doing good work. As the provincial government, we are happy with the work of the police during this season,” Ntuli said.
Police deployments along the beachfront have led to thousands of arrests for crimes ranging from drinking and driving to murder, rape, and drug-related offenses.
Ntuli added that crime statistics have shown a significant decrease compared to previous festive seasons, a sign that law enforcement strategies are working.
Beyond policing, Mkhwanazi has also championed community engagement through sport.
The Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Sport Against Crime Festive Tournament was underway at Brotein Sports Ground in Impendle village, UMgungundlovu District.
Sponsored by the Provincial Commissioner, the games aim to steer young people away from crime by promoting teamwork, discipline, and healthy competition.
Police remain on high alert at KwaZulu-Natal’s beaches, with Mkhwanazi stressing that operations are not limited to festive season incidents but also target broader criminal activity.
“Our focus is on ensuring that communities feel safe, whether they are at the beach, at home, or at public events,” he said.
