eThekwini Municipality says the rehabilitation of the Kings Park swimming pool remains on track and within its original R86 million budget, although funding has been spread across multiple financial years to allow for phased completion.
In a statement on Wednesday, the municipality said phase one was completed in September 2025 at a cost of R41.1 million.
The work included extensive structural, electrical, mechanical and aesthetic upgrades.
These included the removal of the asbestos roof, redesign and reconstruction of steel roof members, structural steel repairs and refurbishment, mural artwork, electrical stripping and reinstallation, mechanical works, painting, and the removal and reinstallation of roof sheeting and façade metal cladding.
The municipality said the facility was forced to close following severe storms in 2024, which exposed structural risks. The full bill of quantities, it added, makes provision for the complete upgrade, rehabilitation and refurbishment of the venue.
