The Gqeberha Regional Court has sentenced Kevin Pretorius to an effective 10 years’ imprisonment following the deaths of Mari Hoon (28) and her fiancé, Jean Vosloo (25), who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while staying at Pretorius’s Kliphuis guesthouse in April 2020.
Evidence presented in court by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) showed that the couple died after inhaling toxic carbon monoxide fumes that accumulated in the bathroom due to a defective gas geyser installation.
Investigations revealed that the geyser lacked a flue pipe to channel hazardous gases outside the building.

KwaZulu-Natal’s economic development department said a new R13.4 million small-scale manufacturing and value-add centre in Nongoma is designed to help rural entrepreneurs improve their prospects.
The KwaMajomela Small Scale Manufacturing and Value-Add Centre was implemented through a partnership between the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) and the Zululand District Municipality.
The idea followed a feasibility study commissioned by the department.

- Water supply cut in Free State’s Marakong Village after bloodworms flow through taps
Marakong Village residents in the Free State’s QwaQwa region were left without tap water after a local water utility shut supply to the area when live bloodworms were found in household water, civil society group WaterCAN said on Friday night.
Civil society group WaterCAN said on Friday that more than 100 families are facing a public health emergency after residents reported finding worms in the water flowing from their taps.
