According to driver Isaac Miya in reports, more than ten heavily armed suspects, dressed in blue overalls and balaclavas, surrounded the vehicle and forced two staff members out.

As the robbery escalated, a traffic patrol vehicle attempted to intervene. The suspects opened fire, striking an officer in the leg.

Free State MEC for Community Safety, Jabu Mbalula, confirmed that the officer is recovering in hospital and remains in stable condition.

“This attack is deeply disturbing. Criminals exploited the quiet Easter period, knowing roads would be less busy. One of our officers was caught in the crossfire, but she is stable and receiving excellent care at Busamed Hospital,” Mbalula said.

Police are investigating the robbery.
