Four vehicles were destroyed when a grass fire spread into a truck and bus repair yard near the N2 in Bonela on Saturday, but firefighters prevented the blaze from reaching nearby homes and additional vehicles.
eThekwini Municipality said Fire and Rescue Services personnel were dispatched at about 09:55 following reports of a grass fire near 19 Westmeath Avenue.
“The swift response came after emergency calls were received from concerned motorists travelling along the N2 who reported thick smoke and flames spreading rapidly along a cliff adjacent to the freeway,” the municipality said.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found that the fire had spread beyond the cliff edge and into premises used for the parking and repair of trucks and buses.”
Several vehicles at the property were already on fire when emergency teams arrived.
Firefighters deployed five water streams and launched an aggressive attack on the blaze, prioritising nearby residential properties and preventing it from spreading to more vehicles.
“The fire destroyed four vehicles, including two buses, one truck and one light motor vehicle, before firefighters brought the blaze under control,” the municipality said.
“The fire was successfully contained before it could spread further into neighbouring residential areas or cause more extensive damage.”
No deaths or injuries were reported.
The response involved three Rapid Pumpers, one Water Carrier and Command Vehicle 09, according to the municipality.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation, although officials suspected it may have been started by a cigarette butt discarded from a passing vehicle.
“This incident highlights how a single careless act can quickly escalate into a serious threat to lives, property, businesses and critical infrastructure,” the municipality said.
“We urge residents, businesses and motorists to remain vigilant and to report fires immediately to emergency services to enable a rapid response and minimise damage.”
