Labour Dept: 55% of inspected Gauteng petrol station employers breached labour laws

More than half of the 682 filling-station employers inspected across Gauteng since April were found to be non-compliant with labour laws, with inspectors also uncovering major failures in unemployment insurance declarations, compensation cover and workplace safety.

The Department of Employment and Labour said 374 employers, or 55%, failed to comply during its ongoing Blitz Inspections Project, while 50 employers were not registered with either the Compensation Fund or Rand Mutual Assurance.

Deputy Minister Jomo Sibiya made the remarks on Wednesday at the Petroleum Industries Employers’ Breakfast Session at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.

He said the project started in April 2026 and would continue until all filling stations in Gauteng had been inspected.
