Two civilian women and two members of the Anti-Gang Unit tragically lost their lives in a shooting in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday night, in a deadly incident that has once again placed the township’s persistent gang violence under the spotlight.
According to reports, the two police officers were responding to reports of a shooting in the area when they came under attack.
The preliminary information said the officers had first discovered two women who had been fatally shot inside a vehicle before they were ambushed.

One of the Anti-Gang Unit members died at the scene, while the second officer later succumbed to their injuries.
The incident happened in Reiger Park, an area that has faced recurring shootings and concerns over gang-related violence.
Earlier this year, two people were killed and three others injured in separate shootings in the township, with police investigations pointing to the ongoing challenge posed by gun violence in the area.
The latest deaths come months after a mass shooting in Reiger Park in November 2025 in which six people were killed and three others injured.
Police subsequently deployed the Anti-Gang Unit to the area as investigations into the violence continued.
The loss of two Anti-Gang Unit members has now added a devastating dimension to the latest violence, with police officers themselves becoming victims while responding to a shooting.

The Ministry of Police has confirmed that Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia will visit the scene on Sunday, together with Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Dimpane and Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni.
The visit follows as authorities continue to confront persistent gang and gun violence in the area.
Previous police operations in Reiger Park have included dedicated Anti-Gang Unit deployments and multidisciplinary operations targeting illegal firearms, drugs and suspected gang activity.
According to the police, the circumstances surrounding Saturday night’s shooting remain under investigation, while authorities are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
