14 illegal miners dead, scores injured at disused Marikana, Nkaneng mine

Fourteen illegal miners have died, and scores of others have been injured at a disused mine in Nkaneng, near Rustenburg in the North West, police said on Tuesday.

North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Arthur Peter Adams was on his way to the scene as authorities worked to establish exactly what had happened at the abandoned mine, SAPS said.

“14 illegal miners dead at disused mine – scores injured at Nkaneng near Rustenburg- Provincial commissioner of North West on the way,” SAPS said.

Rustenburg is a known hotspot for illegal mining.

The North West has faced a persistent illegal-mining problem, with disused mine workings attracting so-called zama zamas and prompting concerns over safety, criminal activity and the risks associated with abandoned shafts.
