Volkswagen Group Africa’s R4 billion investment in its Kariega plant will support production of the new Tengo from 2027, expanding the facility’s manufacturing line-up alongside the Polo and Polo Vivo.
President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the investment at the company’s 75th anniversary gala dinner in Nelson Mandela Bay on Monday, saying it showed confidence in South Africa’s automotive manufacturing capabilities.
“We do not take this investment for granted. In an intensely competitive environment, South Africa must continue to demonstrate that we have the capabilities, the skills and the policy environment required to attract these investments,” he said during his keynote address.
Ramaphosa also highlighted VW’s investments in the country, including in education, saying they were a reminder that the future of advanced manufacturing begins in classrooms.
