Chemical shortages sink opening of Joburg public pools

Johannesburg has delayed the opening of its municipal swimming pools by a month as chemical stocks run critically low at some facilities, while new recruitment requirements have excluded an estimated 80% of former seasonal lifeguards.

The city, which postponed the start of the 2026/27 swimming season from 1 September to 1 October, said on Tuesday that shortages of pool chemicals, difficulties recruiting lifeguards and delayed repairs and maintenance were preventing facilities from opening.

The city said its biggest concern was the shortage of swimming pool chemicals after being without a dedicated supply contract for about 18 months.

“The stocks are critically low at some facilities and some facilities have virtually no chemicals remaining.”

A short-term procurement process worth about R750,000 is underway while the tender procurement process is being finalised.
