NELSON Mandela Bay executive mayor Nqaba Bhanga was involved in a fatal two-car accident on Saturday evening in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.
Eastern Cape police said they are investigating a case of culpable homicide after two people were fatally injured in the collision.
Bhanga, a Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor and the party’s Eastern Cape leader, was hospitalised at the Netcare Greenacres Hospital for what were initially thought to be minor injuries, according to mayoral spokesperson, Leander Kruger, saying that they may in fact be more serious.
“He was driving his own vehicle at the time. Two persons involved in the car accident are believed to have succumbed to their injuries on the scene,” said Kruger.
“He is thankful for the incredible work healthcare workers continue to carry out during these trying times and appreciative of the excellent care he has received thus far.”
