Inkatha Freedom Party’s Nkandla Local Municipality mayor Mbhekiseni “Bhejane” Biyela has died.
Biyela, a stalwart of the IFP and dedicated servant of Nkandla, passed away on Sunday.
Mkhuleko Hlengwa, IFP national spokesperson, described Biyela as a “dedicated and committed leader” whose tireless service to Nkandla and the Party exemplified the IFP’s core values.
“His unwavering commitment to the betterment of Nkandla will forever be remembered,” said Hlengwa.
“His contributions to the Party and his community leave a legacy that will inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. This is a devastating loss for the IFP.”
“As both mayor of Nkandla and Constituency Secretary, Biyela demonstrated remarkable diligence, discipline, and integrity. His leadership was instrumental in consolidating the IFP’s influence in Nkandla, a region of significant political importance in South Africa.”
The IFP noted that his passing marks a significant blow to the Party, which greatly valued his principled approach to leadership.
His legacy as a hard-working and principled deployee will remain a source of inspiration for those he led and worked alongside.
“On behalf of the IFP, Hlengwa extended heartfelt condolences to Mayor Biyela’s family, friends, and the Nkandla community during this time of mourning,” said Hlengwa.
The African National Congress (ANC), a coalition partner of the IFP in the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, also expressed its condolences.
ANC provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo extended sympathies to the Biyela family and the IFP.
“Although we belong to different political parties, we believe it is vital during times like these to come together and offer our support. We remain committed to promoting unity across political lines and embracing exemplary leadership that transcends party affiliations,” said Mtolo.
He said Biyela will be remembered as a leader who devoted his life to improving the lives of Nkandla residents and strengthening the IFP’s mission.
