Government, City of Joburg in talks over renaming Sandton Drive after Leila Khaled

The Government is currently in discussions with City of Johannesburg’s leadership regarding the proposed renaming of Sandton Drive.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya made the announcement during a media briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Thursday.

He said renaming streets is a crucial aspect of the democratic society’s effort to address the injustices of colonialism and apartheid.

However, there are diplomatic considerations, particularly concerning the renaming of Sandton Drive, in relation to the United States.

He added that the National Government, through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, is engaging with the City of Joburg to manage these diplomatic sensitivities.

“The purpose of these discussions is to establish a process that allows the national executive to navigate diplomatic tensions with the US sensitively,” said Magwenya.
