eThekwini Municipality says the rehabilitation of the Kings Park swimming pool remains on track and within its original R86 million budget, although funding has been spread across multiple financial years to allow for phased completion.

In a statement on Wednesday, the municipality said phase one was completed in September 2025 at a cost of R41.1 million.

The work included extensive structural, electrical, mechanical and aesthetic upgrades.

These included the removal of the asbestos roof, redesign and reconstruction of steel roof members, structural steel repairs and refurbishment, mural artwork, electrical stripping and reinstallation, mechanical works, painting, and the removal and reinstallation of roof sheeting and façade metal cladding.

The municipality said the facility was forced to close following severe storms in 2024, which exposed structural risks. The full bill of quantities, it added, makes provision for the complete upgrade, rehabilitation and refurbishment of the venue.

An initial R42 million was allocated in the previous financial year. A further R20 million has been set aside for the current financial year to fund phase two, with the remaining R24 million budgeted for allocation in upcoming financial years to ensure completion.

Kings Park remains one of South Africa’s premier aquatic venues and the only facility certified with World Aquatics status. The municipality said its rehabilitation is vital for economic growth and sports tourism.

“Upon completion, the newly upgraded facility will enhance the City’s ability to host future national and international events, bringing revenue to the municipality and reinforcing Durban’s position as a premier sports tourism destination,” the municipality said.
