eThekwini Municipality has welcomed Toyota South Africa Motors’ R10.4 billion investment in the production of the ninth-generation Toyota Hilux, saying it will strengthen Durban’s position as South Africa’s leading automotive manufacturing hub and provide a significant boost to the local economy.

The investment was announced during the launch of the new-generation Hilux at Toyota South Africa Motors’ Prospecton manufacturing plant in Durban on Thursday.
Mayor Cyril Xaba said the investment reflected growing confidence in Durban’s economy and the municipality’s efforts to improve the business environment.
“We welcome this investment as a strong endorsement of Durban’s economic potential. It reflects the progress we have made in creating a stable and enabling environment for investment, supported by continued improvements in service delivery. We remain committed to partnering with industry to drive economic growth and create sustainable employment opportunities for our residents,” Xaba said.
The municipality said the investment is expected to stimulate local economic growth, safeguard and create jobs, strengthen the city’s manufacturing base and generate opportunities across the automotive value chain.

Xaba said the investment further reinforces Durban’s reputation as the country’s automotive manufacturing capital and is expected to attract additional local and international investment.
Toyota South Africa Motors president and chief executive officer Andrew Kirby acknowledged the municipality’s efforts to improve critical infrastructure, including water, sanitation, electricity and road networks.
“These improvements are essential to maintaining a globally competitive manufacturing environment and ensuring investor confidence,” Kirby said.

The municipality said the investment would also strengthen its rates base, boost exports through the Port of Durban, support local suppliers and small businesses, and contribute to the city’s long-term economic resilience.
It said continued collaboration with strategic investors such as Toyota would be critical to driving inclusive economic growth and creating sustainable livelihoods.
Xaba reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to working closely with Toyota South Africa Motors and other investors to strengthen the local economy, improve service delivery and position eThekwini as a preferred investment destination.
