The South African Police Service (SAPS) has appointed Lieutenant General Sizakhele William Dyantyi as the new Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, with the veteran officer taking over at a time when gang violence, organised crime and violent crime continue to plague the province.
Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane announced the appointment in Cape Town on Wednesday, saying Dyantyi will officially assume office on Saturday.
His appointment forms part of SAPS’ organisational renewal programme, which includes the appointment of new provincial commissioners in the Western Cape, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The appointment comes after a wave of weekend shootings in Cape Town and Stellenbosch in which 11 people were killed in separate incidents – assumed to be gang-related — and as Operation Prosper continues joint deployments by the SAPS and the defence force in crime hotspots to combat gangsterism.
Although the latest quarterly crime statistics showed improvements in several priority crime categories in the province, Dimpane said the Western Cape continued to face entrenched gang violence, extortion, illegal firearms, drug trafficking and other violent crimes.
“He takes over leadership at a time when this province continues to confront one of the country’s most complex crime environments,” Dimpane said.
“The appointment comes against the backdrop of another painful weekend in which eleven lives were lost in separate violent incidents in the city of Cape Town. A stark reminder that behind every crime statistic is a grieving family, a traumatised community and a society demanding decisive action.”
Dimpane said Dyantyi’s appointment followed a rigorous and consultative process to identify a leader capable of driving the SAPS Reset Agenda and strengthening policing in the province.
She said the new commissioner would be responsible for providing strategic leadership across the province’s six policing districts and 152 police stations while helping create a safer environment that supports economic growth.

“Safety and economic growth are inseparable. The Provincial Commissioner therefore carries not only a policing responsibility, but also a broader responsibility towards creating conditions that strengthen business confidence, protect economic infrastructure and contribute meaningfully to the province’s growth and prosperity,” she said.
Dyantyi has 34 years of policing experience and most recently served as District Commissioner of the West Coast District. He has previously held leadership positions including Community Service Centre Commander, Station Commander, Cluster Commander, Provincial Head of Crime Prevention and District Commissioner in both the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
He holds a Master’s degree, an Honours degree, a Bachelor of Technology degree and a National Diploma in Policing.
“As he assumes office with effect from 1 August 2026 at the rank of Lieutenant General, we have every confidence that his leadership will strengthen organisational renewal, enhance operational effectiveness and deepen public trust in policing and aggressively lead the Reset Agenda,” Dimpane said.
Addressing Dyantyi, she said: “Remain visible among your members and instil discipline, integrity and accountability; be accessible to communities, strengthen community partnerships and participation in the fight against crime and remain uncompromising in the fight against corruption and organised crime.”
Dimpane also thanked retired Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile for his leadership in the province and acknowledged Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Luyanda Damoyi for ensuring operational continuity during the transition.
SAPS is expected to announce the appointment of new provincial commissioners for North West on Thursday, followed by Limpopo and Mpumalanga on Friday.
